Ugandan actress, dancer, and filmmaker Esteri Tebandeke, known for her role in Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine’s song Singa and as Sarah Katende in the global hit film Queen of Katwe, has died following a prolonged illness.
She was 42.
Born in 1984, Tebandeke gained acclaim not only for her acting in productions such as Imperial Blue and Cooking Oil, but also for her stage performances and contributions as a filmmaker.
She was the founder of the Binti Film Festival, which launched successfully last year and was set for a larger edition this year.
News of her passing emerged on Tuesday morning via social media, sparking an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues.
Century Cinemax Uganda described her as “a gifted creative whose contribution to the industry will be remembered,” noting her impact as an actress, dancer, and storyteller.
Tebandeke had battled a kidney condition for several years. In 2022, she underwent a kidney transplant, receiving a donation from her husband, Samuel Lutaata Tebandeke.
Unfortunately, her body later rejected the organ, leading to further complications.
In recent weeks, she had been admitted to the High Dependency Unit at Nakasero Hospital, where she was on oxygen support as her condition deteriorated.
Her legacy spans film, stage, and festival work, inspiring a new generation of Ugandan creatives. Tributes continue to pour in, reflecting her influence on the arts both locally and internationally.
